Have you ever had a cool growth hack but lacked the technical acumen to get it done? Some technical skills are important to be an effective growth marketer, but coding school is not required. Whatever you want to do, there’s probably a tool out there to help you do it.
My GrowthX Academy class had the opportunity to speak with badass growth hacker, Kumar Thangudu. Although Kumar is well known in growth hacking circles and has advised many companies both large and small, Kumar is definitely not the attention-seeking type. Kumar is very down to earth.
You know the stereotype of the Silicon Valley whiz kid who’s processing speed and memory recall is rivaled only by his speech cadence? Take that, add a ton of EQ and you’ve got Kumar Thangudu.
Kumar’s talk focused largely on his use of little-known tools and resources that, when utilized effectively, can help achieve explosive growth and low cost lead generation. Here are three favorite growth hacking tools from his arsenal:
Pro tip: Have an idea for a software product? Smoke test it!
Create an Instapage with a product name, a description of the product and a download now button that doesn’t actually download anything. Build in link-texting for cell phone number collection and user validation purposes. Use your conversion rate to gauge demand for your product.
(Note: You don’t actually have to have text-to-downloading functionality set up, as long as you can collect a cell number or email. It’s just an extra step in validating your potential customer. If you decide you want that feature, we reccomend LinkTexting.)
Cost: $29.99/month for basic package
Twitter is a great way to connect to a potential user base and generate leads. But, creating Twitter lists is a pain in the butt. It’s a multi-step process that involves searching for and adding users individually, one at a time. Electoral HQ automates this process and helps you manage your lists too, saving you time and Advil money (you know, for frustration-induced headaches).
Have you ever been on a cool website and enviously thought to yourself, “How did they do that?!” Well, wonder no more!
When you enter a link into BuiltWith it returns all the technologies a website was built with (including analytics, content management systems, web server information & more). This way, when you want to emulate an awesome growth feature you saw for your product/service, you can immediately point your developer in the right direction.
Upwork is a top marketplace site of vetted freelance services. You can find engineers on Upwork to build you all sorts of scrapers and bots. The best growth marketers know what they can do, what they can’t do and what they don’t have the time to do. Upwork is a great option.
Pro tip: Kumar warns that finding the right freelancer on Upwork is a skill unto itself and you should probably read some guides or be prepared to lose a bit of money figuring it out on your own.
Where there is a will, there is a way. Even if you are not the most technically apt growth marketer, there is likely a technology out there to help you accomplish your goals. You just have to look for it. It also wouldn’t hurt to follow Kumar on Twitter.
